House Bill 1298: Require the Board of Regents to prepare a plan to close one of the postsecondary educational institutions under its control
February 11, 2009
I had a feeling that this bill was going to fail to begin with. Closing a university is extremely good way to hurt our economy. Representative Kirkeby can't force the Regents to hypothetically pick a university and then give appropriate reasons to close it. Our universities have unique missions and the thought of "well you can just move those classes to another university" is extremely flawed. 1) The regents DO NOT create new programs in one university if it is offered in another 2) The costs of moving a university may be more 3) Students are going to choice to go out of state instead of moving across the state.
